The Egyptians believed that Ma'at was established by the creator god, Ra, at the very beginning of time, emerging from the primordial chaos, and it was the force that regulated the entire universe, from the movement of the stars and the flooding of the Nile to the ethical conduct of people. The Pharaoh's most crucial duty was to uphold and maintain Ma'at on Earth against its opposite, Isfet (chaos). As a goddess, Ma'at was often depicted as a woman, sometimes winged, wearing a single ostrich feather on her head, which symbolized truth. Her most famous mythological role was in the afterlife, specifically in the Hall of Two Truths. Here, the deceased's heart was weighed on a scale against her feather. If the heart balanced the feather, the person was judged righteous and granted passage to the afterlife; if the heart was heavy with sin, it was devoured, resulting in a second death and the cessation of existence. Therefore, living a life according to the principles of Ma'at was paramount for all Egyptians, from the ruler to the common citizen, ensuring both societal stability and eternal salvation.
